Automation as the key to becoming a Legal Business Partner

Jo van Ijzeren

The role of the corporate lawyer is at a turning point. Whereas lawyers were traditionally seen as gatekeepers of risk and compliance, organisations today increasingly expect them to contribute strategically to growth, innovation and decision-making. However, this transformation to Legal Business Partner will only succeed if lawyers free themselves from time-consuming routine work. Automation is not a luxury, but a necessity.

Practice shows that much of the legal time is still spent on repetitive tasks such as contract analysis, standard documentation and initial legal assessments. By partially automating these activities, there is more room for more substantive work: strategic advice, proactive risk management and more intensive collaboration with business units. This speeds up legal assessments and makes processes more consistent and scalable. It's very simple: those who spend less time on bulk work can deliver more value at the intersection of law and business.

Shift

Legal insights are better integrated into existing systems, such as contract management and compliance dashboards. This makes legal information more accessible, measurable and relevant to management and other departments. The legal professional is thus shifting from a reactive advisor to a data-driven sparring partner who helps substantiate decisions.

Automation is not a threat to the legal profession; on the contrary. Corporate lawyers who embrace this development position themselves as indispensable Legal Business Partners who contribute to the success of the organisation.
